Vancouver Gambling Addiction Treatment

Understanding Gambling and Mental Health

Gambling can start as a source of entertainment, but for some, it becomes a persistent pattern that negatively impacts finances, relationships, and well-being. Gambling disorder is now recognized as a behavioral addiction, sharing many features with substance use disorders, including cravings, withdrawal, and loss of control.

When Is Gambling a Problem?

Problem gambling isn’t defined by how often you gamble, but by how it affects your life. You may:

-Feel unable to stop or control gambling
-Chase losses or gamble to escape stress
-Lie about gambling habits
-Struggle with finances or relationships because of gambling
-Experience anxiety, depression, or anger tied to gambling behavior

Can Therapy Treat Gambling Addiction?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is currently the most evidence-supported treatment for gambling disorder. A 2023 meta-analysis found that CBT significantly reduces the severity of gambling disorder symptoms, as well as gambling frequency and intensity—especially when treatment includes tools like:
-Identifying triggers and high-risk situations
-Managing urges and cravings
-Challenging gambling-related thoughts
-Building alternative coping strategies
-Planning for relapse prevention
